Digging Deeper: Fusing Art and Ecology—Dry-Stacked Stone Walls - SOLD OUT
Valley View Garden
Sat, Jun 12, 2021
4:00 PM- 6:00 PM
This steep site was transformed into an artful and environmentally sound retreat, creating more space for a young family to live surrounded by birds and butterflies. Andrea Hurd, founder and head designer at Mariposa Gardening & Design, will share the ecological gardening techniques her firm used here to inspire participants to try them elsewhere. Applying natural form, rhythm and pattern to the design, planting low-water and native, pollinator-friendly plants, sourcing local materials, as well as harvesting and re-using water on site transformed a barely usable backyard into a sustainable and vibrant habitat.
Andrea will focus on Mariposa’s specialty of dry-stacked stonework. A member of the Stone Foundation, she has trained in the ancient art of dry-stacked stone building in England, Scotland, Mallorca, and Cambodia. Here, her firm created four leaning flagstone walls that open up living terraces in the sloping site, allow water to flow naturally into the ground, and are unforgettable focal points. The largest, the Sunrise Wall, features a spectacular play of natural color in the stone as well as inset mosaics of birds in flight and the sun. Mariposa is an award-winning Bay Area landscape design and build company that works to bring beauty to the practice of sustainability.
